RIX - According to a surname project based at the University College in London the surname of Rix is an English locational name. This name, in earlier times, was most common in Norfolk with some over-spilling into the rest of East Anglia. The surname of Rix, and variations, was established in several areas of Norfolk before the first registers began to be kept in the sixteenth century. John Ryck of Weeting left a will proved in 1474. Thomas Rykke of Fincham left a will proved in 1483 and Simon Rycks of the same parish left one that was proved in 1491. The will of Robert Rycks, of East Dereham, was recorded in 1503 and the will of Edmund Ryxe, rafeman, of Folsham, was recorded in 1504. A few references to the Rix surname also turn up in early Welsh records.
